English is the language of Employability in this Globalized scenario. Especially communicative competency in English ensures and procures promising lucrative jobs at home and abroad. In this context the HEIs have the responsibility and accountability in equipping the students with effective communication skills in English. The existing strategies and techniques of developing communication skills in English have proved to be inadequate. Even after years of study of English, majority of students from rural and semi-urban background are found to be inadequate in communication skills. To address this specific lacunae in the teaching of English language and developing communicative skills in English, the Department of English, Jayaraj Annapackiam College for women (Autonomous), Periyakulam organized a one day regional seminar on “Current Teaching Techniques of Developing Communicatiion Skills in English” on 30.07.2009. The secretary of the college, Rev.Sr. Dr. M. Rajeenal, presided over the inaugural function and delivered the Presidential address, highlighting the importance of the English language in the historical perspective and its sway over the other languages. Rev.Sr. Dr. Y. Yesuthangam felicitated the efforts taken by the English Department in realizing this seminar against all odds on a very relevant and significant theme. Dr. S. Lakshmi, Professor of English, GRU, Gandhigram, delivered the inaugural and keynote address on ‘Task based language Teachning’. Professor K. Lawrence, Academic Head, EBEK Language laboratory, Villupuram familiarized the participants on the Technique of ‘Developing Listening Skills in Adult Students’. Dr. T. Santhosh Kumar, Reader in English, Annamalai University conducted a workshop-cum-lecture session on ‘Planning Learners for performing language tasks’. Dr. M. Lawrence, SG Lecturer in English, The American College, Madurai in his Valedictory address underlined that unless self driven passion and desire combine the strategies and techniques, no amount of external factors will help students to communicate in English. A good number of 22 teacher participants from 10 colleges participated in this seminar and 16 teachers out of them presented their papers.
