PROFILE

The PG & Research Department of Zoology, which had a humble beginning in 1971, has grown into a well developed Research Centre in 2013. It now offers UG (both Aided and Unaided), PG, M.Phil. and Ph.D Programmes in Zoology, Allied Zoology course for UG students of Chemistry, two Skill Based Elective courses for the UG students, one EDC for PG students of other disciplines and a Certificate Course on Clinical Laboratory Technology .
There are 98 students in the UG Aided, 50 in the UG Unaided, 35 in the PG, three in the M.Phil. and six in the Ph. D Programme. With the introduction of Autonomy in 2004, Subjects are updated on par with recent trends in Science and Technology in consultation with subject experts and the inter-disciplinary papers, namely, Medical Lab Technology, Applied Zoology, Forensic Biology , Nanobiology and Bio-technology were introduced for the PG students. The library resources also are enhanced with 2836 books and 15 periodicals. The faculty members effectively adopt new teaching methods such as audio-visual presentation, group discussion, team teaching, on hand training, project and field trips. The periodical departmental Association activities such as quiz, paper presentations, debate, exhibitions and guest lecturers enhance the students’ skills and aptitude. The Department, to its credit, has thirteen teachers and out of them ten faculty members are Ph.D. holders and three others are successfully pursuing their Ph.D. The chosen thrust areas are Ornithology, Herpetology, Vermitechnology, Entomology, Immunology, Haematology, Microbiology, and Toxicology. Five faculty members have obtained Ph.D. Guideship. Four Major and one Minor Research projects are in progress.

The teachers regularly update themselves by attending Refresher courses, Orientation Courses, Seminars and workshops.One faculty member received many Awards in recognition of her excellence. Two International, Three National and two Regional seminars and three Workshops have been organized by the Department. The other best practices of the Department include First Aid and Health Counselling to the needy in the campus and effective propaganda against the use of plastics in the campus.
